Orway
Orway, indie rock made for the road
Influenced by J.J. Cale, The Eagles and Neil Young, Orway started playing the guitar the first time he heard Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. With his new album SEPIA DREAM, he takes us on a pleasant road trip filled with songs we love through endless highways.
It would be surprising to know that a big source of Orway’s inspiration, the wide open spaces of America or Australia, stems from his imagination. Growing up in a small Normandy town he often dreamed of more and this idea of endless possibilities has nurtured his creativity ever since.
As a teenager he played in a jazz band and often spent his recesses practicing and experimenting with rock and blues. His guitar, an instrument of voyage…
Afterwards Orway would play with musicians many years his senior. “Playing with older musicians taught me a lot because of their enormous musical experience”.
The guitar, an instrument of voyage
As an engineering student that worked in a factory during his summer vacations, Orway often dreamed of the wide open spaces of Australia. This was how he came to write his first song 'Stuart Highway', the name of the Australian highway that connects Adelaide to Darwin over 2800 kilometers.
At that time he would become a volunteer fireman for several years. “This experience was very enriching for me and gave me confidence in myself”. Then he began to write the songs that would make up his first album. In the meantime he met his wife, an American from Virginia. Traveling by proximity perhaps?
During several years, Orway would collaborate with many diverse musicians before recording the fourteen songs of his first album. It would take two years to perfect DRIVING THROUGH THE NIGHT, recorded at night in his home studio while his children slept. The album was released in 2020, the year of the Covid-19 pandemic…
Under lockdown near Paris and benefiting from the freshly acquired experience of his first album, Orway started writing and recording new songs.
Made in collaboration remotely with the drummer Patrick Carmichael based in New York, Orway delivers SEPIA DREAM, an album made for the highways that stretch towards the horizon at sunset.
